As most of you know by now, the IRS is supporting prior year e-file with the implementation of Modernized e-file (Mef). So, TY 2011 1040 returns have continued to be accepted via e-file beyond the normal October 15th cut-off we are accustomed to. In fact, 2011 returns will be accepted electronically for 3 years. But … IRS will shut down for a maintenance period. Those of you who have been e-filing business returns are probably accustomed to the 2-week shut down for maintenance around the end of December. Well, for 1040, it’s a little different, at least for this year. IRS will shut down at 10 am ET on November 23rd and will be down until the TY 2012 returns can be e-filed on January 22nd, 2013. That’s right – a 2 month maintenance period. You can continue to paper file TY 2011 returns, of course, and that’s what we would recommend.

The Internal Revenue Service offers debt relief to taxpayers who owe money. Tax relief programs were put in place to help taxpayers pay back the total amount of money, interest, and penalties owed when they don’t have the income or liquid assets to immediately pay the debt off all at once. While tax settlements are sometimes an option, for many it is not a reality. Much like dealing with a credit repair agency, tax debt relief from the IRS is offered as a loan which is used to pay back overdue balances in a payment plan that the taxpayer qualifies for. Just as with varieties of creditors, the IRS offers different pay schedules to pay back the money owed. For some, a quarterly payment plan makes more sense than a monthly payment plan. Regardless of the reasons that the taxpayer’s tax debt exists, all taxpayers are required to pay their debt. Tax collection can come in the forms of seizing of assets, garnishing the wages of a taxpayer and more but the IRS has offered ways of achieving tax debt relief that make more sense and have less of a negative impact on the taxpayer’s life. Those who wish to be sure that they are doing everything possible to pursue options ensure they have no alternative may consult with a CPA or tax lawyer. This may also expedite the process as experienced accountants and lawyers will know exactly what they should do to achieve the best results. Seeking a professional may also give you knowledge and counseling on issues that might affect your future such as bank levies or wage garnishment. In some cases, the IRS may accept offers from professionals on behalf of the taxpayer to make a settlement payment and completely end the debt owed. Getting the peace of mind and resolution of your problems is the best solution and though there are other options, your main concern should be preventing the debt from impacting you and your family’s lives.

Recent economic conditions in this country have left many people confronted by serious tax issues with the IRS. Accelerated Tax Solutions, a leader in the growing tax resolution industry, has cofounded the National Association of Tax Resolution Companies. The NATRC's mission is to monitor and regulate the quality of services tax resolution companies provide to consumers. Citing failures of some now defunct companies in the tax resolution industry (JK Harris, Ronnie Deutch, et al.) to maintain and abide by the high standards industry veterans like Accelerated Tax Solutions have established over the years, the NATRC is working to regulate its own industry and push for legislation that will protect consumers.
At its inaugural conference held in Washington, D.C. earlier this year, the NATRC encouraged its members to continue applying best practices in how they promote and conduct their businesses. The conference addressed concerns about high-profile national companies that advertised false or misleading promises of their abilities to reach tax settlements with the IRS or took money from clients without working on their cases.
Tax resolution companies work on behalf of taxpayers who are subject to IRS enforcement and collection efforts because of tax delinquencies. Legitimate companies like Accelerated Tax Solutions use experience and a knowledge of the IRS rules and regulations to pursue the best possible tax resolution for their clients without promising outcomes that are impossible to achieve.
